The Weight of Holding Still / Kandè

First the discipline. Then the sound.

Before music, there was dance. Kandè spent years learning through movement: repetition, precision, the quiet rigor of rehearsal, the peculiar awareness that comes from existing under stage lights. Long before writing songs, she understood how emotion could live in the body. That history runs through Neon Soul, her 2025 debut EP. The record doesn’t leave dance behind; it absorbs its logic. Rhythm feels physical, restraint becomes expressive and each song carries the instinct of someone who first learned to communicate through movement instead of words.

Before Kandè was a name on a festival lineup, before she shared a stage at Release Athens 2023 with Rosalía, Tinashe, and Ayra Starr, the only Greek act of that day, she was a dancer. Since 2017, trained at the Greek National School of Dance, moving through musicals including The Phantom of the Opera. The discipline came first. The voice came second. In people like her, the two never fully separate.

Her discographic debut came in 2022. By February 2025, Neon Soul — seven tracks, twenty-one minutes — was released through Mellowsophy Music, the indie Athens label that has carried her from the beginning. Between those two points: a trail of singles:What a Lovely View, Who Knows, Spaghettification, Fury of War, ID Card, each one a test of how much she could hold at once. Neo-soul and R&B in her hands isn’t retro longing. Something more restless. A sound that knows exactly where it comes from and refuses to stay there. Athens is in it, but not the postcard version. The underground version. The version that produces artists who have to build their own context because the existing one doesn’t have room for them yet.

The EP release show was at Oddity Club. The name fits. She has always been slightly outside the frame — dancer turned vocalist, classical training turned indie output, local scene turned international stage. The distances between those things are usually where the interesting work happens.
