Have you ever felt an instinctive, visceral connection with an inanimate tool, a bond that transcends any physical limit or categorisation?This is the sensation we should carry with us before experiencing Jesse Draxler’s new work at Art Basel Miami. In collaboration with The Patina Collective, the world’s largest Mercedes-Benz museum, the artist has created a large-scale installation that explores and materialises the reciprocal relationship between man and machine, understood here not merely as a vehicle of transport. Through his visual work, after his long cross-country journey, Draxler interprets the two-way exchange between human and instrument, a dynamic, subtle limbo in which totemic imagery and functional tools constantly oscillate.The machine here represents technology and progress, but it is also history.

The vehicle, in this case the 1997 Mercedes C280, has undeniably become a totemic image; for humans, it calls to travel, freedom, and the persistent nomadic impulse, embodying not only utility but also a metallic vessel of intrinsic values. What the artist presents in this form is a dynamic record of both physical and conceptual journeys. The multidisciplinary forms he employs reflect the unpredictability and fragmentary nature of the human-tool relationship and the full spectrum of life itself. The work echoes the artist’s background in rural Wisconsin, a place where engineering, fabrication, and repair emerge through raw, unrefined materials.
