Chloé and Vanessa Beecroft’s Partenope / Naples

Ennio Morricone’s only opera, staged at Teatro di San Carlo.

A rare convergence of music, myth, fashion, and performance, Partenope marks the long-awaited world premiere of Ennio Morricone’s only opera, staged at Naples’ iconic Teatro di San Carlo. Directed by Vanessa Beecroft and featuring a historic first collaboration with Chloé under Chemena Kamali, the production unfolds as an ethereal tribute to femininity, ritual and the city of Naples itself, where sound, movement, and costume merge into a singular, immersive experience.

Our world is crawling with creation. Music, art, fashion, human connection, human performance. It is when we combine these aspects of life and originality that we can create a truly sublime experience. A historic first staged performance, Partenope is a rare convergence of music, history, myth, femininity, and fashion.

The world premiere of Partenope, nestled in the iconic Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, is notable not only as the only opera ever composed by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, but also for its remarkable directorial vision. Vanessa Beecroft, known for her striking contemporary art performances, brought her unique sensibility to the production, guiding a narrative that blends stillness and movement, myth and intimacy, fashion and theatricality. The opera premiered on December 12th and 14th, 30 years after its original 1995 commission in Campania, Italy, which never came to fruition.

This ethereal performance was also a milestone for fashion. For the first time, Chloé, under creative director Chemena Kamali, collaborated on a performance of this scale. Alongside Daniela Ciancio, the theater’s renowned costumer, they crafted a visual language that perfectly harmonized with Beecroft’s vision, resulting in costumes that were romantic, intimate, and raw. The collaboration marked a rare alignment of high fashion and opera, producing an immersive, multisensory experience.

Partenope, a one-act opera, interprets an Italian libretto that tells the story of a mythical Greek siren. After failing to ensnare Odysseus, she chooses to end her life, her body resting on the shore of what would become Naples. The performance pays homage to the city through the incorporation of folk music and traditional instruments, with the libretto rendered primarily in Italian, accented by Greek and Neapolitan dialects, giving it an unmistakably local heartbeat.

Sovereign Youth

Freedom (n.): State of being at liberty. Exemption from external control. To depend on nothing. Milan Fashion Week, Spring/Summer 2015 in review by Ana Laura Cuevas.

It is a bold act of independence living within one’s limits. A bolder act of freedom comes through classism outstripping descent. No dignity is more imposing than that of a distinct point of view that belongs not to the past, not to the present, but to the individual mind.

Time waits for no one, and grievance takes the place of expectation when youth struggles to live up to bygone times. Lonesomeness is sovereignty, it is detachment from history, the remains of beauty from a former life. Rough stitching, cropped pants and mix-match sweet fabrics blend in the drive of an autarchic tone, mixing tones of clichés and disenchantment. It is the discipline of a few that sets the trail for real conquest: Jil Sander sees the new hand of Rodolfo Paglialunga, Fendi and Bottega Veneta fiddle with denim, while the master of bourgeois propriety sends passion for antiquity down the runway at Prada.

In freedom lies power, and with power comes success. Maybe youth should not have power over the past, but over itself.

“Online, I want the work to live forever” he affirms when asked about how his work interacts differently within the digital and physical realm. Having a foundation as a sculpture, it was through programming that artist Damon Zucconi first started to evaluate words as the raw material from which to shape his coded-based art: a shift of paradigm that brought him to view text as a matter with its own agency.
