Spotlight on Berlin Fashion Week.

Berlin Fashion Week AW26 focused less on how fashion looks and more on how it resonates with us. Designers explored the pressures we face, the journey of self-discovery, and the power of memory. Collections revealed a dance of contrasts: ambition meets longing, softness collides with strength, and the urge to expose ourselves balances with the need for control. What emerges from this season is a shift toward clarity. Embracing a more intentional simplicity. Fewer pieces, but with deeper meaning. Themes of memory, power, and constraint aren’t just concepts; they shape how we connect emotionally with each garment. Berlin AW26 hints at a future where relevance comes from the precision and thoughtfulness behind what we wear.

Sia Arnika “Overtime”

The office-to-nightlife uniform is emerging, not as a compromise, but as an evolution. Sia Arnika AW26 captured the shift: we’re no longer mourning the separation between work and play; we’re finding power in the blur. Set to DJ Europa’s escalating pulse, the collection moved from restrained to unleashed, acknowledging that transformation doesn’t require a costume change. It just requires conviction.

This is where fashion is heading: toward clothes that hold multiple lives at once. Corporate greys and blues that refuse to stay serious once you add volume, texture, and a faux fur tail whipping off heavy boots. Arnika wasn’t proposing we escape the grind, but that we make it ours. Sequins against leather, frayed edges on cardigans, silvered seams catching light. Embellishment as reclamation.

What’s predictive here is the confidence in fluidity. A generation that morphs so constantly has even started to enjoy it. The clothes suggest we’re entering an era where dressing isn’t about becoming someone else, it’s about carrying all your versions at once and deciding which one leads.

SF1OG

Early-2000s paparazzi culture created a specific kind of visibility: raw, unpolished, and the celebrity breakdown as accidental spectacle. SF1OG AW26 returned to that aesthetic precisely because we’ve lost access to it. Set against a brutalist postwar building, the collection pulled from emo-sleaze and Victorian mourning in equal measure. Side-parted bangs obscuring faces, oversized cardigans meeting silk and shearling, collars that referenced an era when grief was performed outwardly, but the self stayed hidden.

What’s emerging is nostalgia for a time before every moment required curation. A generation raised on Instagram perfection is circling back to Britney leaving rehab, Lindsay in the back of a car, not the chaos itself, but the permission it gave to be unfinished in public. That texture feels radical now, which says everything about how controlled visibility has become.

The collection exposes the tension between public performance and private emotion. Between yearning for authenticity and operating in an overexposed, overly staged reality. We’re entering an era where the staged candid is a strategy.

Unvain Studios “Unvain”

Branding has gotten loud. Ironic, referential, desperate to be legible. Unvain’s AW26 debut rejected it all. Invitations stitched with pressed flowers, a brutalist concrete space, and the refusal to explain itself beyond atmosphere. A brand choosing to exist in the in-between, trusting its own language instead of performing for algorithms.

What made it resonate is the broader shift it taps into: a generation exhausted by loudness, moving toward sincerity and self-definition. The collection paired utility with vulnerability: sharp silhouettes and protective elements colliding with sheer details and sculptural forms. Tenderness against severity. Nature brushes up against something industrial and hard. It’s neither soft nor defended.

The collision of rockstar attitude with brutalist restraint signals what’s emerging: less maximalism, more tension. Fewer trends, stronger identities. Fashion is moving away from borrowed aesthetics toward something more specific and more interior. Unvain suggests presence matters more than polish, where the refusal to be loud is its own kind of power.

Haderlump “Varius”

Androgyny has been flattened into a uniform lately: clean, neutral, safe. Haderlump AW26 went somewhere more interesting: Marlene Dietrich as attitude, not symbol. Set inside an old theatre with heavy red velvet and a soundtrack that mixed piano with electronic beats, the show felt cinematic. Johann Ehrhardt used familiar codes only to unsettle them. Androgynous tailoring interrupted by lace, utilitarian layers cut open to reveal softness, long coats flashing femininity beneath. Scarves replaced ties. Glamour appeared where it shouldn’t.

The collection reflected a generation that’s bored with androgyny as mere neutrality and is more interested in it as play and provocation. The collection signals a modern power dressing: less about adopting masculine codes for legitimacy, more about deciding which codes to borrow, disrupt, or discard entirely. Haderlump suggests elegance and femininity can exist on their own terms, interrupt when they want, and leave before explaining themselves.

loannes

Fashion continues to mine decades for aesthetics, but loannes went further: personal memory as a design language. The designer referenced his mother in the 1990s, not the era’s cultural codes, but the intimate ones. The way someone styles themselves when no one’s watching, when it’s just reflex. Dark sunglasses, slicked hair, silhouettes that feel inherited rather than invented. What’s interesting is the shift from collective reference to personal archive. A generation raised on shared moodboards and universal trends is starting to reach for what’s closer: family photos, inherited gestures, the codes that only make sense if you were there. Loannes makes the case that specificity isn’t about obscurity. It’s about designing from a real-world context.

The collection suggests authorship is moving inward. Less about what everyone recognizes, more about what only you remember. The designers who matter next won’t be the ones referencing culture broadly; they’ll be the ones translating something nobody else has access to. Memory as a competitive advantage.

Laura Gerte “Deviant Defiant”

The villain gets more interesting once you stop apologizing for her. Laura Gerte pulled from eroticism and darkness as leverage. The collection positioned desire as a tool, rather than a risk. A woman who understands exactly how her refusal of likability reads and uses it strategically. Deconstructed Dr. Martens, deadstock reworked into something unstable, and the mood intentionally charged but disciplined.

Watching female agency celebrated and policed in the same breath, the culture rejects palatability as currency. Gerte’s work suggests that the future belongs to designers who understand that power and provocation aren’t opposites but co-conspirators. The collection points not toward empowerment as branding, but authority without explanation. The villain is a blueprint rather than a warning.
