Marc Bijl / Complex dilemma of ambiguous minds
Music | Soundscapes
New wave art by Marc Bijl: Maria Abramenko in conversation with the Dutch artist, discussing music, dystopian thoughts, the dark retro future and his art practice.
NASTY premieres “The Night Goes On” exclusively ahead of its official release, the third single from the “Take Control” EP. Listen for the mechanism. Most peak-time techno spikes and clears out, because the drop is where the reward lands and everything after it is comedown. This one keeps its foot down long past that point. The bassline holds. The vocal, hers, holds. She keeps the good hour open well after the trained response says close it now, leave first, don’t wait for the loss.
That response has a name in a Durban childhood that handed her one rule: give up or fight. She fought. Lee Ann Roberts named her label NowNow, South African for soon, the kind with no hurry in it, the kind that assumes there will be enough. She sang before she produced. A school choir, African percussion through the walls, a voice that was hers before she owned a single piece of gear worth the name. It runs at the front of this record now.
The oldest thing she owns, out front, deciding how long the night lasts. She calls this grit, and grit is in it. She survived, she is standing, she is not holding back. But the fight that got her out is old news. What she does now is decide when the good part ends, and almost no one who grew up rationing believes that decision is theirs. “Take Control”, the title track, does the same work more slowly. Control, for her, used to mean getting through the night. Now it means choosing how long the good part of it runs, the one input she was told she would never have, written by someone who grew up with none. The EP lands 24 July.
You know the flinch, if you came up in the same way. The night is good and you are already easing toward the door, so the ending can’t land on you first. It kept you safe once. It doesn’t now. Nobody hands you the clock. You take it, the way she did, and stay!
