On Saturday, June 10th, the Founder and Creative Director of NASTY Magazine, Marco Giuliano, unveiled his first solo photo exhibition in Milan titled ‘DARKROOM’ curated by Tommaso Dapri and Veronica Bottan on display at Tempio del Futuro Perduto in Milan, Italy. The event was followed by the intense Educazione Techno Sessuale party.
Seduce, let loose, the vision and the void. In the realm of darkness and shadows, hidden narratives are waiting to be unveiled. “DARKROOM” is an open invitation to discover the magic within the shadows in a selection of photos from both his editorial and personal projects. Analog and digital shots in which beauty and eros intertwine, forging an aesthetic stillness made of deep gazes, restless minds, delicacy and latex created along the years together with his partner Anca Macavei. The elusive nature of the dimly lit subjects, surrendering to the rhythm of the shutter as it captures the fleeting essence of each moment remains lingering as whispers in the heart.
The location itself draws a parallel between the exhibition’s content and the physical space. The term “darkroom”, often associated with a sense of mystery and intrigue, traditionally refers to both the space used in photography for developing film and the restricted areas of some clubs where people can freely express their sexuality. In this case, part of the photo archive is exhibited literally underground, further enhancing the thematic resonance of the title. Marco Giuliano’s artistic influences emerge primarily from a deep exploration of music and clubbing, cinema, philosophy and fashion, which now is his main work domain. These diverse realms intertwine to shape his artistic vision, which he fearlessly expresses through his work.
Tempio del Futuro Perduto serves as both a physical and mental environment that encourages individuals to explore their true selves. It becomes a sanctuary where people can embrace their individuality, celebrate freedom and express diversity of gender and identity. On some special occasions, such as the Educazione Techno Sessuale parties, the audience is invited to revel in the thrill of self-discovery, dress (and undress) in their most extravagant attire, dance to pulsating beats and embrace a true sense of liberation and communion with like-minded people.
The dark and sensual nature of the photos and an unconscious role-playing game between the gazer and the subject matter is starting. This unexpected and uncontrolled game of guilty desires, explains why the voyeuristic art of photography is appealing to both the creator and the audience.
Meet you in the dark room, where we stand still and time slips back.
